Vylkove, the Danube Delta
the Izmail District of the Odesa Region

The first impression upon arriving in the town is this: nothing particularly stands out; it’s an ordinary small town with private houses, some remaining Soviet-era buildings, and churches. Although the population of the town is small—around 6,000 people—there are three churches here. One of them is truly Old Believer: entering with exposed body parts and taking photos is prohibited. Most local resorts are located closer to the Danube, and they’re practically indistinguishable from other seaside tourist spots in Ukraine. Here, guests are mostly offered two-story houses with small rooms accommodating 2-3 people.
The cuisine here mainly consists of fish dishes, with the local fish soup being particularly noteworthy. It’s served in a unique way: the broth itself comes in a special bowl, while the fish it’s made from is served separately, along with a special garlic sauce. Another highlight of Vylkove’s cuisine is fried frog legs, which can be ordered individually. They taste somewhat like white chicken meat or rabbit. The local specialty wine, “Novak,” made from a grape variety that grows exclusively here, is quite good and has a flavor resembling something between Isabella and Lydia grape products.
But the most interesting and magical part begins where the mighty Danube comes into view. Here, the first impression of the town as just an “ordinary district center” fades away. This is where you see the real Vylkove—indeed, the “Ukrainian Venice,” crisscrossed by numerous large and small canals. The town itself is quite contrasting. It’s loosely divided into several sections and has a few main streets—some on land and others on water. You can start with a walk along the local paths, which feels at least unusual and distinctive. You’ll find yourself navigating narrow, improvised wooden walkways, crossing countless bridges and footbridges. Interestingly, their maintenance is a joint effort between the local authorities and residents: some provide the materials, while others repair the paths directly in front of their yards. While strolling, you could easily end up in a dead end or wander right into someone’s courtyard. Vylkove has no formal addresses or street names; locals navigate by the house number on either side, making navigation a challenge. But it’s not really a problem, as the town is quite small.

When it comes to water excursions, things are a bit different here. Residents primarily navigate the wide canals using motorboats, with a speed limit of no more than 20 km/h within town limits. It’s worth noting that only about a third of the locals own these boats, mainly those involved in fishing or who take tourists on rides. One boat owner shared that in non-tourist seasons, locals usually spend their time fishing. The ultimate dream of every fisherman in Vylkove is to catch a rare, endangered sturgeon, which they might well call a “golden fish.” Locals also harvest reeds from the countless islands that have formed in the Danube Delta, mainly for export to Europe. During the tourist season, however, lucky boat owners ferry visitors along the cozy water streets of the town, doubling as guides and sharing fascinating stories about Vylkove and the Danube. You can also rent a canoe or kayak yourself.
However, when you come to Vilkovo, you don’t have to stay in the town the entire time. There are several other fascinating spots nearby that are definitely worth a visit. One highlight is a trip well beyond the town, about 30 kilometers away: traveling down one of the Danube’s branches all the way to where it meets the Black Sea. On this journey, you’ll witness true wild nature, with a stunning variety of birds, including entire colonies of pelicans and swans. Along the route to the Danube’s mouth, you’ll also spot old houses along the riverbanks, whose residents rarely travel to town, living in close harmony with nature. They mostly harvest reeds, catch fish, and grow grapes, strawberries, and even pomegranates and persimmons (the climate has recently warmed, allowing these fruits to thrive here). Local suppliers pick up their goods on-site, often working on a barter basis.
At the very point where the Danube flows into the Black Sea, freshwater mixes with saltwater, causing water currents to constantly deposit sand onto the shore. As a result, this area is gradually expanding. Here stands a commemorative marker with the symbolic name “Kilometer Zero.” Due to the growth of the island, which locals proudly call “the youngest land” or “the place where Ukraine begins,” the marker is moved further toward the sea each year. Locals also say that, by passing this sign, a person sheds all negativity, thereby “resetting” themselves and finding inspiration for new beginnings and achievements.
A walk through the network of islands in the Danube Delta is just as fascinating, especially on Yermakiv Island. This unique island, shaped by both nature and ecologists, is part of the Danube Biosphere Reserve. Here, you’ll experience true harmony with nature and see an impressive array of bird and plant species—from vast pelican colonies to herds of wild horses and cattl.
If you’re looking to truly “rest your soul” and don’t crave noisy parties or entertainment, this is the place for you. Even a brief visit of just a few days is enough to explore the surrounding islands, soak up the atmosphere of the “Ukrainian Venice,” and feel at one with Mother Nature on the islands. And romantic evenings on the banks of the Danube, accompanied by the sounds of frogs and insects, are simply guaranteed.

In 2015 was born an idea to join the “green tourism”. The basis of the legend was the stories of parents, old-timers of the city, materials from the local museum.
The house in which the estate “At Malanka’s” is founded has its own history. It was there that in 1807 the residence of the Cossack Ataman of the Danube Sich was located during the quartering of the Cossack troops in Tatarbunary. Later, during the years of Soviet rule, after the closure of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Convent in the village of Borisovka, nuns moved here. From here they went to eternity…

It was a difficult new case for Melaniya Petrovna. To convince and attract the first visitors was not easy. But seeing happy faces and hearing enthusiastic reviews turned out to be the strongest stimulus. Gradually improving the program of work with clients. Friends help: a living legend picks up an accordion, Pavlov Alexander Semyonovich, an honorary citizen of the city, and an experienced cultural education worker, Dudnichenko Lyubov Alexandrovna, helps to develop the script. The manor is listed in the tourist directory of the Odessa region. The collection of historical artifacts is constantly updated, a team of staff from local youth is selected. The project is not without prospects and clearly evolving. The meeting program is rather eventful: guests are greeted with bread and salt at the entrance, then a guided tour of the estate, historical stories about the Tatarbunary region. Afterwards – a delicious lunch consisting of a main dish – hominy with cracklings, flavoring, salads, and of course Bessarabian wine. During lunch, guests enjoy different table games, fun ethnical songs and dances. And in the end – the anthem Tatarbunar is surely performed.
