The animal collection of the Odesa Zoo includes 252 species, totaling 1,560 specimens. Among them are 94 species of fish, 7 species of amphibians, 39 species of reptiles, 78 species of birds, and 33 species of mammals. The Odesa Zoo houses rare animals listed in the IUCN Red List, the European Red List, and the Red Book of Ukraine—more than 60 species in total, many of which successfully reproduce. Among them are the famous Indian elephants, Far Eastern leopards, Przewalski’s horses, Turkmen kulans, European mouflons, hamadryas baboons, brown bears, steppe cranes, saker falcons, eagle owls, and many others.
The zoo’s scientific specialization is “Rare and Endangered Animals of Southern Ukraine.” It houses the only breeding center in Ukraine for birds of prey and owls. Odesa Zoo is also the only zoo in Ukraine where Indian elephants successfully reproduce. In 1992, the first elephant calf, Fantyk, was born—he later became a performer in a European traveling circus. He was hand-reared by his foster mother, the head of the carnivore and elephant section, L. N. Popova. In July 1998, a baby elephant girl named Tendy was born weighing about 90 kg; she now lives in Kharkiv Zoo. On October 17, 2004, the third elephant calf, Duke, was born. For two consecutive years, rare animals such as Amur leopards (snow leopards) have also bred successfully in the Odesa Zoo. These leopards inhabit the Far East and are among the most beautiful and rarest cats in the world. Fewer than 40 individuals remain in the wild, and they are protected by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Odesa Zoo is not only a center for the preservation and breeding of wild animals but also an important educational institution. Special attention is paid to environmental education for young people. The zoo regularly organizes ecological festivals for children and school students, which have become traditional and beloved events.
